What to do on Isla de Lobos: Routes, sea and activities

Fuerteventura, with its volcanic landscape, endless beaches and that relaxed atmosphere that is so sought after today, is undoubtedly one of the most special corners of the Canary Islands.

But if you want to go a step further and experience something truly different, the Island of Lobos awaits you north of Fuerteventura, just 20 minutes by boat from Corralejo.

This small, protected islet is a true natural treasure where time seems to stand still and the only thing that matters is enjoying the moment. Today we'll tell you all about it. 5 unique experiences that you can only experience in this unique corner of the Canary archipelago.

1. Discover an untouched volcanic landscape

The moment you set foot on the island, you're overcome by a feeling that's hard to describe. The terrain is dry, dotted with volcanic rocks, plants resistant to wind and sun, and an awe-inspiring silence. It's as if nature itself is whispering in your ear that you're in a special place.

La Caldera Mountain, the highest peak in Lobos, is a dormant volcano that elegantly dominates the landscape. You can climb to its summit and enjoy spectacular views of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. The contrast between the black earth, the turquoise sea, and the clear sky is a picture-perfect scene that will stay with you forever.

2. Swim in crystal-clear waters that look like a natural pool

La Concha beach, also known as Playa de la Caleta, is probably one of the most magical spots in Lobos. Light-colored sand, calm waters, fish swimming all around you… and a peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of other beaches. Here you can swim at your leisure, snorkel, and enjoy a sea that looks like it's straight out of an advertisement, but without the filters.

Furthermore, in El Puertito you'll find small coves nestled among rocks and charming fishermen's cottages that seem frozen in time. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind, and perhaps even take some spectacular photos.

3. Walk along trails surrounded by wild nature

Although the island is small, it offers several well-marked hiking trails. The most comprehensive one circles the island, allowing you to discover its diverse landscapes: arid areas, lagoons, dune areas, and even wetlands where you can observe birds.

Lobos Island is a nature reserve, so the native flora and fauna take center stage. Shearwaters, herons, lizards… they all form part of this practically untouched ecosystem. It's an ideal experience if you enjoy hiking and observing nature in its purest form.

4. Practice water activities in a privileged environment

For sea lovers, Lobos is a little paradise. Besides snorkeling, which lets you discover a seabed teeming with life, you can also rent a kayak or try paddleboarding in calm waters. If you enjoy underwater photography, don't forget your camera: schools of fish, starfish, sea urchins, and even the occasional ray might cross your path.

5. Fresh fish at the island's only beach bar (if you're lucky)

It's not a fancy restaurant, nor does it need to be. In El Puertito, you'll find the only establishment authorized to serve food on the island. It's a small beach bar run by locals who have lived and worked in this area for generations.

The menu is simple but authentic: fresh fish, wrinkled potatoes and good mojo sauce.

Dining here, overlooking the turquoise waters and surrounded by tranquility, is one of those experiences that can't be replicated anywhere else. Furthermore, everything served here is transported from Fuerteventura, so it's important to book in advance if you want to guarantee a table.

Since capacity is limited and the venue isn't open year-round, it's best considered a backup plan. Also, there's nowhere else nearby to buy food, so it's recommended to bring something to eat just in case.
